The Point of the Gospel
The
Sermon on the Mount
con’t
Good
Deeds
{Matthew}
Jesus
said, “Be careful not to do good deeds just to show other people how good you
are. Your Father won’t reward you. Don’t announce charitable deeds with fanfare
in the churches and in the streets as hypocrites do to be honored by people.
They have received their reward in full. Do not let your left hand know what
your right hand is doing. Give in secret. Your Father will see and reward you.”
Treasures
In Heaven
{Matthew}
“Worldly
treasures can be destroyed by moths and rust or stolen by thieves, so instead,
place your treasures in heaven. For where you store your treasure, there you
will also keep your heart. The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are
good, your whole body will be full of light, whereas if they are bad, you will
be filled with darkness. And that darkness is great!”
“No
one can serve two masters. He will hate and despise one and love and be devoted
to the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
Don’t
Worry—God Knows What You Need {Matthew, Luke}
“I
tell you don’t worry about food, drink, or what you will wear. Life is more
important than food or clothes. Consider the birds of the air, which don’t
reap, sow, or store food in barns. Yet your heavenly Father feeds them. You are
much more valuable than they. Can you add a single hour to your life by
worrying?
“The
lilies of the field do not labor or spin, yet not even Solomon in all his
splendor was dressed as well. If God clothes the grass of the field, which is
here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, will he not also clothe you, oh
you of little faith? So don’t worry and run after your physical needs as the
Pagans do. Your Father knows you need them. Seek first his kingdom and his
righteousness, and all the things you need will be given to you. Don’t worry
about tomorrow. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
{Luke}
“Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you
the kingdom. Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for
yourselves that won’t wear out and treasure in heaven that is never ending.”
