Short Romance Story

Most publications want holiday stories six months in advance. This didn’t come to me in time but I’ll send it out next year.

Romantic Negotiations

The holiday season ended on a question mark. Letitia wondered what future lay in store for her relationship with Ron or if theirs had been a merger of convenience. Two long-divorced singles concentrated on their children and careers, they had joined forces for the rounds of social and business celebrations usually inhabited by couples.

Ron left town for two weeks to visit his son, daughter-in-law, and first newborn grandchild. He sent flowers for Letitia’s birthday and called. “Sorry I couldn’t be there to hand them to you in person, Lettie.”

“They’re beautiful,” she said. He remembered her preference for colorful multi-floral arrangements rather than roses. “Getting used to being called Grandpa?” she teased. Ron gave a soft, snorting hmph. Letitia recognized the pleasure in the scornful sound.

“Remember that guy from your office who decided to serenade everyone? My granddaughter’s crying reminds me of him.”

That’s exactly what her coworker had sounded like on the higher notes now that Letitia, eyes crinkling, thought about it.

Ron hesitated. “Her name’s Marion, after her grandmother. She seems so fragile. My boys were big bruisers.”

Smiling at his concern—he was a big man himself—Letitia said, “Don’t worry, it’s muscle memory. Holding an infant will come back to you.” She winced when envy crept into her voice. Her son and daughter weren’t yet at the stage to even consider making her a grandmother.

Ron laughed in sympathy. “Give your kids time, Lettie. You wouldn’t want them to become parents before they’re ready.”

“You’re never ready,” she said, heart lightening at the intimate warmth in his voice, “no matter how many books or internet posts you read. Prepare the best you can then jump in headfirst and do the real learning as you go.”

More of the story on Wednesday.
